Many "oohs" and "ahs" were evident
as the newly restored stained glass windows were unveiled and dedicated on
October 1, 2000. The windows were originally a part of The First
Baptist Church building on Collingwood Boulevard where they were also in
the narthex of the church. They were created by the Associated Art
Glass Company of Columbus, Ohio and were originally dedicated in
1953. Following the move of the church to its' Springfield location,
the windows were placed in storage and remained there for twenty
years. The expansion and remodeling of the narthex restores the
windows to the same area of the church building they occupied when
installed on Collingwood Boulevard.
The extensive restoration of the windows has been
completed by Toledo Artist Janine Ody of Cristallo Architectural Glass
Studio. She was present at our dedication and can be seen doing
the restoration work in pictures below. The special framing and
placement of the windows was designed by consulting architect Robert
Martin and constructed by Rudolph Libbey.
The original windows were gifts of Dr. and Mrs. Howard
L. Green and Lillian and Bill Krapp. The restoration and
installation were provided for through gifts from Minnie Coley in memory
of her husband, Claude and by Milton and Marilyn Bennett.
These windows are irreplaceable. One depicts the
baptism of Jesus and the other features The Lord's Supper. Pictures
of the restoration work and the artist can be found below!
The Baptism Scene
This scene of the baptism of Jesus by John is actually portrayed at the
place where the baptism occurred, taken from a photograph made by Mr. RM
Bain. It represents that moment when God's blessings fell upon Jesus
and John heard the voice saying, "This is my beloved Son...Hear ye
Him." (Matthew 17:5)
The Lord's Supper
The Lord's Supper is a beautiful reproduction of "The Last
Supper" by Leonarda da Vinci. The scene depicts that tragic
moment immediately following the statement of Jesus, "One of you
shall betray me" (Mark 14:18) which has caused amazement in the faces
and attitudes of the disciples. To the left of Jesus as we face the
picture, the first three are John the Beloved, Peter and Judas.
Still further to the left are Andrew, James the Younger and
Bartholomew. On the right as we view the picture, and nearest to
Jesus, are Thomas, James the Elder and Philip. At the extreme right
are Matthew, Thaddeus and Simon.
