The Sesquicentennial Fountain
On Sunday, November 17, 2002, we dedicated the
Sesquicentennial Fountain. The original architectural drawing of the
church building envisioned a fountain in front of the church building,
visible to traffic on Perrysburg/Holland Road and Pilliod.
Due to the winds on the front side of the building, a
spray fountain would not work. Our new fountain does not use a
spray. Our many thanks to our consulting architect Mr. Robert Martin
who created the design. The cutting and engraving of the fountain
sculpture was coordinated by Lloyd Brothers, and the installation and
mechanics were created by GEM.
The fountain consists of two parts: a granite base
and three interlocking, granite pillars. The pillars are cut from
one piece. The granite is from Quebec, Canada and the cutting was
completed in Vermont. The pillars compliment the circular motif
found on the front of our building.
The three pillars are representative of the Trinity, a
theme further developed in the symbolism of our sanctuary. Only the
base and top of each pillar are polished. The unpolished sides
express the concept the the work of creation is yet unfinished.
There are two verses engraved on the side of the largest pillar.
Both verses are from John 4. They are the words of Jesus, "Let
anyone who is thirsty come to Me . . . The water that I give will become
in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life."
The fountain is a gift to the church from Milt and
Marilyn Bennett. It is given in recognition of the 150th anniversary
of our church. Mr. Bennett also provided oversight for the entire
project. We express our deepest gratitude for their generosity and
love for this church.
We dedicate the Sesquicentennial Fountain to the glory
of God. For all those who look upon it, we pray that it will be a
visual source of quiet and peace and a reminder of the living waters
flowing through them.
Special THANKS!
