Baptismal Screen
The Screen
The baptismal screen provides a passageway from the
robbing rooms to the baptismal for the candidates being baptized.
Its purpose is to give privacy to the candidates being baptized before and
after the public act of baptism. The screen also serves artistically
as an expression of what it means to be in Christ and to profess Him as
Lord and Savior. In the stained glass, the sun
shines brightly with its rays of light pointing and reaching to earth.
The sun is the Father, the giver and source of all life. The waters are
representative of our identity with Christ. As Christ was crucified,
buried and raised from the dead, so we are buried with Him in the waters of
baptism and raised to new life. In the screen, the dove looms large.
The dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. To be in Christ is to know
the presence of the Holy Spirit watching over us, protecting us and
empowering us. The trees, the greens and the fruit represent our new
life in Christ. We are created anew to grow, express ourselves and
bear fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, gentleness, kindness and patience.
In dedicating the screen, we expressed our appreciation to
Milt and Marilyn Bennett who made possible the generous gift of the screen
to First Baptist. Milt was the stalwart of this project, giving
encouragement and leadership from inception to completion - a period of over
two years. Janine Ody is the stained glass artist
who created the baptismal screen. It is her design and expertise
that put form to a vision centered on the ordinance of baptism. Janine
is the artist who also restored the stained glass windows from the
Collingwood church that are now the focal point of our narthex. Bob
Martin, as with all of our projects at First Baptist, including the building
additions, renovation of the sanctuary and outdoor fountain, served as
architectural consultant. Rick Meadows of Rudolf Libby has once more,
as he has will all major projects at First Baptist, served as project
manager. We express our deepest gratitude to all of
those whose names are listed above and for their dedication, generosity and
talent which has resulted in this beautiful baptismal screen commemorating
the ordinance of baptism. The Stained Glass Process
The glass and processes that went into the making of the
Baptismal Screen look very complex and certainly can be until you learn
through testing which different color combinations give the desired effects.
Thermal forming is the correct term for the process of
melting multiple layers of colored glass, powders and frit (colored glass
pieces), together into a shape. Many colors are created by the simple
layering of two or more colors which are then heated to 1470F to melt them
into one. In this art piece, many individual shapes flow together
visually to create the larger image of a single design. |
