Missions

Right now we have a variety of needs in many ministries in which our congregation has made a commitment.  These include local, state, national and international missions; the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Ministry; Dayton Christian Center, Christian Women United Thrift Shop; Fellowship Fund; donations to our Military soldiers and families and much more.

Missions Through the Year

First Baptist focuses on specific giving opportunities for missions throughout the year.  Our typical schedule is as follows:

  • America for Christ - Spring (March) (National Missions)
  • One Great Hour of Sharing – Early Summer (June) (International Disaster Relief)
  • World Missions – September / October (International Missions)
  • Missionaries & Ministers - December (Retirement Fund for Missionaries and Ministers)

Missions You Can Do RIGHT NOW!

You make a difference!  You truly do!  Don’t forget to save those cancelled stamps from all the Christmas cards and other mail for the Heifer Project.  This Thrift Shop project makes possible the purchase of animals for third world countries, thus providing income to individuals that might otherwise have no means of support.  A cow, goat, water buffalo, ducks, chickens, to name a few become a family enterprise.  For no monetary contribution, you can make a difference in the lives of the very poor.

First Baptist Welcomes Missionary

First Baptist was excited to welcome Rev. Dr. Stan Slade to our Worship and Sunday School on August 9.  Rev. Slade presented a "Mission Moment" during our worship service at 9:30 AM and then a full presentation during Sunday School at 10:45 AM for all adults.  Rev. Slade is a global consultant for theological education.   His presentation included video from his work around the world and a discussion of the new roles of missionaries in our changing world.  Rev. Slade previously served as a visiting professor for leadership training ministries throughout Iberoamerica and now serves as a visiting professor and consultant globally. In this role Rev. Slade joins American Baptist missionaries and partners around the world to strengthen their work of preparing church leaders, specifically in theological formation and reflection, both formal and informal.

Stan’s passion is to help others encounter the transforming message of Scripture through inductive Bible study. His gifts and expertise have been developed over many years of study and ministry. He now makes them available to national partners and missionaries who need the help to strengthen existing ministries.

Before this new role, Stan was on the Valley Forge staff helping with planning and research and before that, he and his wife, Cathy, served as missionaries in El Salvador.  They were commissioned in 1983.

STAMP Out Hunger

Help stamp out hunger!  Please keep saving canceled postage stamps.  A box for depositing the stamps can be found in the hall outside Pastor Scott's office.  To prevent damage, please leave at least 1/4 inch of paper around each.  During 2007, $1032.86 was raised for Heifer Project.

Heifer's Mission to End Hunger
Heifer envisions…world of communities living together in peace and equitably sharing the resources of a healthy planet.

Heifer’s mission is…
To work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth.

Heifer's strategy is…
To “pass on the gift.” As people share their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe.

Heifer’s History
This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for over 60 years. Today, millions of families in 128 countries have been given the gifts of self-reliance and hope.

Campbell Soup Labels

Save Your Labels!
We are still collecting Campbell labels. These can be brought to the church anytime. The labels are them forwarded to Dayton Christian Center and are used to purchase needed equipment. This is a simple and easy way to participate in Mission awareness and giving something you might normally throw away. There are many products that bear the “CAMPBELL” label, so be sure and look before you toss it out.

This memo is from Campbell’s as a result of a letter written to them regarding the placement of glue on their labels. From Anne Pizarro, Director of Labels for Education. “I am writing regarding the Campbell’s Labels program. We ask that you send in 51% of the UPC code. We also ask that you do not us tape on the labels because the tape is not recyclable. If you have a damaged UPC you can send in what you have of it. The new labels should be arriving in the stores shortly with the new UPC code locations. The new labels on products should be easier to remove.”

There you have it...now bring in those labels!

Food Sunday

We celebrate Food Sunday the second Sunday of every month.  When we receive our tithes and offerings during our Sunday morning worship, food items may be brought to the front of the sanctuary to be given to those in need.

Our Mission and Outreach TEAM would like to thank all the members of FBC who have been so generous in the past with their donations.  Non-perishable foods and donations of cash are always needed and welcomed each Food Sunday.   Thank you again for your support!
